so talented, beautiful and ahead of her time. Born Odessa Cowan, Ina Ray Hutton was born in Chicago in a family registered as 'negro' and 'mulatto'. The only way she could have a career at that time was to pass as white.

@@jaredcravens2658 How did I get a hold of this? I wish I could remember. Before the Internet all of us collectors traded films, tapes and DVDs back-and-forth. We had to admit the print quality was often execrable, but it was the only copy we knew of!

@@petermintunmusic what do you think the likelihood is that a studio print of something like this (or the two reel shorts you post) will ever see the light of day? Do you think the 16mm prints are our last hope for some of this stuff? I’m assuming that’s what this is…

I’ve seen the 1929 version of The Letter with Jeanne Eagels and of course the 1940 classic with the incomparable Bette Davis. I was going to pass on this version until I saw that Lee Remick was in the title role. She is good. The flashbacks are well done but she underplayed the explosive climatic confession that she still loved the man she killed. Given a chance I would love to see Cate Blanchett, Nicole Kidman, or Kate Winslet in the role.

Yes, I miss the great black and white cinematography, and I miss the opium atmosphere in the scene where they go to buy the evidence, but this version of "The Letter" is an outstanding remake. Good roles like that of Leslie Crosbie deserve to be interpreted by more than a couple actors. Bette Davis did great work in the earlier movie, even though I got tired of her doing that bit where she'd turn and bury her face into the back of a chair. Lee Remick was able to show Leslie's hypocrisy went deeper than only having one lover. The writers expanded her sexual appetites which was a good move.

Fun fact - The Richard Himber Orchestra signed a sponsorship deal with Studebaker; hence the name "The Champions". (Champion was a model in the Studebaker line.) Studebaker forced Richard Himber to fire Joey Nash because his last name was the same as a competing automobile.

Growing up in the 1980's I had a natural aversion to Ronald & Nancy Reagan and their folksy warmth, which I interpreted as completely phony. I guess it's de rigeur when you're 16 to affect a Holden Caulfield attitude. But looking in the rear view mirror from the vantage point of my late 50's, all I can see is grace and class and a generous appreciation of these five magnificent women. I'm particularly glad to have the chance to see Mary Martin at the end of her career but still in lilting voice and plucky spirit, and Dorothy Loudon delivering - for me, at least- her greatest rendition of "Fifty Percent".

The guy second to end on stage left, has one style (arms in opposition with legs) and everyone else has the other (arms with legs)
